Google has recently announced the next version of the Android Operating System, Android N.
The operating system is a work in progress but some details have already been shared about what’s coming in the latest version of the operating system.
- Multi Window: Inspired by Samsung’s Multi Window feature, it is now built into the OS and allows you to run two apps on the same screen, at the same time.
- Direct reply notifications: You can now directly reply to your messages right from your notifications.
- Improved Doze functionality: Originally introduced in Android Marshmallow, the new and improved Doze now functions when the screen is turned off.
- Project Svelte: This is an effort to reduce the amount of memory the OS needs, so it can run on a wider range of devices.
And that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are obviously some more features but there is a lot to cover.
The N developer preview includes an updated SDK with system images for testing on the official Android emulator and on the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, and Pixel C devices. Developers residing in the US can get a $150 discount on a Pixel C while stocks last.
Google has also introduced an Android Beta Program available at g.co/androidbeta where you can enrol your eligible Nexus device for the N preview.
