Xperia Z3 to be first non-Nexus device to get Android N preview

Xperia Android N

Sony Mobile and Google have worked together to release the official Android N Developer Preview for the Xperia Z3.

Some users may be annoyed that the Z5 isn’t getting the preview, but this is going to help Sony’s reputation by a lot.

Recently things have looked good in the software department, official Android 6 releases for the flagships, concept software and now this Android N developer preview.

The N preview available for the Z3 is identical to the one found in Nexus devices. Since this is a collaboration between Google and Sony, it’s not really that surprising.

What’s new in Android N Developer Preview?

Android N introduces several great new features for developers, with more to be added as Google continue to develop the Android N release.  Here are some highlights:

Multi-window – This new multitasking feature lets users view two apps or Activities at the same time, with the system resizing them as needed to fit the device or tablet screen. All apps targeting Android N are resizeable unless they opt-out, so make sure your layouts and resources are optimized.

Bundled notifications – You can use the Notification.Builder.setGroup() method to group your app’s notifications together for easier scanning.

Direct reply notifications – Use the RemoteInput notification API to enable users to respond quickly to notifications, without leaving the notification shade.

Efficiency – Adapt your apps to use Doze to save even more power in Android N. There are also new behaviors in Project Svelte, aiming to reduce the memory needs of Android.

To install the preview, you will need to connect your compatible Z3 (D6603 and D6653) to Xperia Companion on your PC, hold down the ALT key while pressing software repair and following the on-screen instructions.

As well as the Xperia Z3, the preview is also compatible with Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Google Pixel C and General Mobile 4G Android One device.
