WhatsApp seems to be making a big deal about encryption lately.
Yesterday in a blog post WhatsApp announced that messages are now end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp says that when users are on the latest version of the app, “every call you make, and every message, photo, video, file, and voice message you send, is end-to-end encrypted by default, including group chats”. This has been developed in collaboration with Open Whisper Systems.
Some of you may be receiving a notification on your device in several chats saying your messages are now encrypted. Tapping on the message lets you learn more about it, as well as the option to verify the encryption with the person you’re talking to.
However you need to be on the latest version to take advantage of this. Otherwise the messages you send won’t be encrypted.
In the Android version of the app, there is a new option called Security where you can receive notifications whenever the encryption changes.
